Fjord 18 Tour restauration

Inlägg av AeroFinn »

Hello gurus,

(I tried to find an existing thread on Fjord 18 Tour but I couldn't find any)

I'm a newbie from Finland and very happy to have found this forum!

Anyways, here is the thing:

There is a Fjord 18 tour I'm interested in buying but I have some concerns: The boat has a Mercury 80 hp four stroke outboard from year 2013 which weighs around 190 kg- Is this too heavy of an engine for the boat? I'm thinking of potential issues with planing at modest speeds, say 17-20kn in case the rear does not have enough lift due to the heavy four stroke engine (as opposite to original two strokes that were lighter)

What do you think?

Another issue - the boat was painted a couple of years ago but the paint does not say but peels off. As heard from the person who did the paintwork he bought the 2 component paint at Bauhaus. According to him the paint he was given came with wrong type of hardener - wether this is true or false I can't confirm. In all cases the paint did dried but peels off now.

Anyways, now it seems I should carry out the whole paintwork again in order to be able to use the boat. The current owner says the paint peels off just by wiping the surface with a rag. ( I suppose he exaggerates but who knows). Has any other member experienced a similar situation?

How big a headache is it to do the paintwork again in this situation? As far as I understand I need to take the existing paint off totally and then do the light sanding, etc. preparative paintwork again..

I attach some links for pictures to see the paintwork:

Anyways, I appreciate a lot if you, dear gurus, can give me some hints in terms of how to fix the paintwork problem and how big a work I should expect it to be..

Thanks,

Artto / Åbo

Hi Artto

The Fjord 18 tour is not that common , that´s why you did not see any other thread about the boat.
Fjord 18 tour.JPG
I have mailed the info about the boat as you might not see the attached picture in this answer.
The boat is original coming from Herwa as Fjord bought the company in the 70s so Fjord did not produce it they just branded it to Fjord.

In your case I should remove all hull paint and repaint the boat.
Using either spray paint or a paint stretch paint:
De Ijissel dubble coat is very good and works also to roll on

or Polyuretan coat from Epifanes

Hi Lars,

And many thanks to your informative answer!

Bummer! I thought I would be buying a quality product a Fjord to carry out a restoration process and enjoy it for many years.. But now it seems it is, maybe, an inferior boat that is not as good in rough sees than a "true Fjord" nor as good in overall quality..

I was hoping for a deep -V / semi-deep -V hull and a solid supestructure.. :( :(

Oh well, I need to find out more info on this matter

Thanks again, Lars

EDIT: wait a minute, I just noticed the sales speach attached to the picture of the sales brochure. Lot's of positive claims on seaworthiness.. :D

I wish this is true!! :)

one more thing:

Dear Lars or other gurus:

Can you say how this boat (Herwe / Fjord 18 Tour) compares to other Nordic HT boats of the similar size, such as Flipper 575HT?

Which one is smoother in choppy waters? As a reference Flipper 575HT having a relatively flat bottom does not do well in choppy waters or when conditions become a bit rougher

thanks again

Hi,

I have no experience of this boat hull anyhow boat deigns of the 60ths usually have flat bottom hulls becuse motor power was comparably lower at that time. Fjord/Herwa was introduced mid 60s the boat generation after this usally had deeper V hulls.
You can find more info on the boat in this blog:

It just came to my mind: aren't the 60 ties hulls very often something between "halvplanade" and "planade"?

Maybe the boat could be operated, together with trim tabs to increase the lift of the stern, at lower speeds such as 12-14 kn if the sea gets rough..

btw Merry Christmas to everybody!

Hi

I don´t believe this boat is deplacement or semi deplacement as the bottom is fairly flat bottom around 12-13°. As you can see it will be fairly easy planning.

In posted comments both on this youtube link & blog yet no answers at least for the time being.

As a side note Fjordling 18ht might be an option, too if one wants to have an 18 footer day cruiser with good driving qualities..
