Fjord 27 engine
Greetings to all and my apologies for posting in English.
I have recently bought a Fjord Selco 27. It has a 106hp volvo on a shaft. At the moment, we will be running it inland but hope to go coastal and eventually give her a trip home to the fjords.
The previous owner says that she will only do about 8 knots max (is that a low estimate as he has never been of the 5mph river with it???). To go coastal we feel we need a bit more poke and top speed occasionally. I understand that other 27s had the TAMD 40/41 in giving 150/200 hp but that these are a bit old now.
Does anyone know of a suitable modern engine for her (we would get a prop professionally matched) for it.
What engine do other people on here run in their 27s? Also, what do people use as a back up. Outboard on a bracket? What hp?
I think she is a lovely boat and would like to think we don't have to abandon her later for a posh girl with twin engines.
regards

Dear Arthor
Fjord/Selco 27 Cruiser is definitable capable of more than 8 knots with around 170 hp she will do around 15 knots and with bigger engines even faster.
A good choice is Yanmar or Volvo diesel engines but some people even have V8 petrol engines in there Fjord 27.
Please read this article from the Swedish boat magazine Vi Båtägare (sorry about the translation language as its from Google translate Swedish-English)
Selcruiser 27
Selcruiser 27 was designed in 1963 by Otto L Sheen. But it would take some years to launch. 1968 was presented the boat and got a very good host. Manufacturers over the next five years, Norwegian Selco A / S. At the end of the year 72/73 the company was taken over by Fjord Boat A / S in which the boat was renamed Fjord Cruiser 27 Four hundred boats were manufactured before production was discontinued and the molds were fired up 1978
Boats manufactured before Fjords takeover came with several engine options. Opted for diesel was Volvo Penta MD 32 or MD 21A. As an alternative, there were four in Volvo's petrol 115 hp. It later turned out to be far too weak. Subsequent specimens were Volvo's straight-6: a 170 hp or double fours at 115 hp.
Its sporty exterior, despite the boat is no "speedboat". The hull with longitudinal keel stands and weighs between planing and halvdeplacerande. Modern and more powerful engines while forcing the boat up against twenty-five knots, without regard to fuel economy. An economic and comfortable cruising speed of around fifteen knots. There lies the most today, which had replaced the old engines such as Volvo MD 40: a or smaller V8s. The 27 foot long hull is very stable. The postings bow makes the boat go dry even stronger motsjö. The lower speeds, especially in medsjö, it feels a bit twisty. The wide transom gladly take over governance. Like all boats with a straight shaft and rudder are reversing a bit tricky. Practice makes perfect.
Inside the boat is equally well planned in the fore and aft cabin which feldisponerad in the cockpit. Early models lacked a separate toilet room. A direct-flow toastol sat underneath the one of the berths in the aft cabin. Later models were at the expense of a kojplats toilet located in förruffen. An estimate of the modification. Otherwise you will find here a Forward cabin with V-berth. Aft of the two longitudinal sofas. Depending on the model (with or without toilet), these one or two full length berths. The aft cabin belonging to the class most spacious one finds the other two by a total of six berths.
So far, the planning and disposition of space optimal.
When we then come to the cockpit, there are some that complain. The kitchenette in the driver's seat is far too low. Table arrangement requires the original version of any publication. Boats on second-hand market has in most cases further developed. Previous owners have probably solved the problem of seating. How thinking of the good Sheen went we have no idea. Perhaps the idea was that the family would gather around the table in förruffen.
Där ryms i och för sig fyra vuxna men vem vill sitta inne en solig dag. Many have moved the galley to port side. The space is in the original version UNAPPROPRIATED. Can with a little carpentry talent turned into a kitchenette with sink, stove and fridge.
A conversion which also makes it possible to reach the engine compartment without tearing down half the interior (galley with double sofa be disassembled). The solution is spelled single seat.
On the driver sit high and have very good vision even with the cover retracted. Rutarrangemanget provides good wind protection. The fact that the boat has no roof (Doghouse) the driver reduces engine noise. The defective insulated engine compartment had little resonance with the power out riding a torment. Sits the old MD 32: an left it is almost impossible to stay in the aft cabin during the voyage.
External design is timeless. Breda slipping side decks and plenty of grab rails make it safe to take along the boat. Stern guard placed in the middle of the foredeck were discussed. At embarkation, it feels absolutely right. Acts of missing rails completely. Standing on the edge of the sun deck, it becomes a balancing act to pull up the anchor.
Qualitatively there is little to fault. The plastic works very well and rarely show any signs of defects. Then the interior fittings of the veneer on the plywood looks a little fade out is more about lack of maintenance. A little sanding and paint tion restores the most worn-out surface. On begmarknaden is Selco and Fjord 27 Cruiser very popular. With the right engine may be much boat for the money. Very small changes were made during the ten years the boat was manufactured, which appears on the price slide. Condition and the engine sets the price, rather than model year.
Plus
+ The quality of plastic work
+ Timeless Design
+ Stowage
Minus
- Cockpit
- Weak engine (original)
- Operation at low speed

Takk for super artikkel. Her er bilde av en veldig tidlig Selcruier. Den har hekkagregat, neppe noen akterkabin og er mye mer avrundet i overbygget. Jeg tror denne er fra perioden 1963-1968 uten at jeg er sikker.Lars Lundbladh skrev:

The pictures are of a very early Selcruiser (not mine). You can probably see that the topside has more rounded lines and there are no sprayrails in on the bow. But it has a stern drive. Some of the early boats had stern drives, at least one of the prototypes.arthor skrev:Hello Cepe,
thanks for the post but I am afraid I don't speak Norwegian. Are you putting a sterndrive in that boat and was it originally sterndrive or inboard.

I just wanted to show you this tid-bit.

Re: Fjord 27 engine
hello all,
finally taken the plunge. My boat goes into the yard next week to have a 250hp Yanmar installed. Can't wait to get her on the water. I'll let you know how it goes.
How many Selcruiser 27 owners out there that have had a similiar engine fitted?

Re: Fjord 27 engine
Hi,
I think you made a excellent choice of engine. The boat should work fine with this. I know of one other boat with yantra engine. I will try to get some comments. We are of course were interested in the outcome. Good luck with the installation.
